PRESS RELEASE

THE BEAUTY OF INEFFICIENCY - KANA ART –
by Kaoru Akagawa
5 October - 8 November 2017
OPENING NIGHT: Thursday 5 October, 6:00-8:00PM

SWAY GALLERY is proud to present a solo exhibition of Japanese artist, Kaoru Akagawa.

“Beauty is for most of the time inefficient”, says Kaoru Akagawa. Imagine how much time women spend today in nail salons, hair salons, gym. Akagawa’s works are time consuming, but she is proud to be “inefficient”.

Akagawa’s desire as an artist is always to cross the borders of many different things: countries, religions, languages, cultures, and more. Akagawa has developed her own style of contemporary art by merging her globe-trotting experience since her childhood and her knowledge and skill as a master of Japanese calligraphy, Kana Shodo. Her unique background enables her to build a bridge beyond time and space.

In “Venus? Or Medusa?” she was inspired by archetypes, fundamental symbols that resonates and are shared by all cultures and people, exemplified by the myth of Venus and the Japanese myth “Ama no Hagoromo”. She “drew” Botticelli’s masterpiece “The Birth of Venus” with the text from “Ama no Hagoromo”. When writing the text, she used only one kind of brush and one kind of ink stone and only with the pressure she gave to her brush, she created Botticelli’s Venus.

In her artworks, Akagawa uses Kana, phonetic scripts unique to Japan which were developed and disseminated by women of nobility in the Middle Ages. Women in Medieval Japan put much thought and effort into practicing and creating their own way of rich and flowing writing, in order to win men’s hearts, since love letters were their main vehicle of communication. They were as inefficient as women today when it comes to beauty.

But unfortunately, Kana were abandoned and forgotten in Japan due to its complexity and the difficulty in passing down and acquiring the necessary skills. As Charles Chaplin has presciently described in his film, anything inefficient was banned in “Modern Times”. Akagawa’s challenge is to revive this legacy of 1000 years in her contemporary artworks.

Kaoru Akagawa was born in Canada, grew up in the U.S., studied in Japan, lived since 2007 in Berlin, and is currently based in London.
