SWAY GALLERY is proud to present the exhibition ‘Jiji and Kinako on Washi’, the world of Jiji and Kinako through photographs printed on Japanese traditional paper, washi, by photographer Akiko DuPont.

One day, at 94, Jiji’s life was turned “down-side-up” by Kinako the Cat. Until Jiji was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, he was a very outgoing man, but he gradually lost interest in life and became grumpier than ever. Kinako the Cat turned that around.
This exhibition shows how the border between animals and humans melts, just like Kinako melted Jiji’s heart. Although Alzheimer’s is a disease that brings sadness and loneliness because of its hollowness, in that hollowness there are points of light that are moments of pure joy, no matter how ephemeral they may be.
Jiji always was a person of love, and Akiko hopes that this photo essay can show the warmth the two exhibit to the viewers, and depict how embracing each moment is important when spending time with Alzheimer’s patients, just like anyone else in your life. And that, through this exhibition, the viewers will be filled with Jiji and Kinako’s love, joy and warmth.

‘It all began naturally. One day Jiji wandered into my room and found the cat. I first kept it in my room and didn’t tell anyone about him. His eyes shined with gigantic happiness and this motivated me to start documenting the two.
There was actually no intention to share the photographs to the world when I began. However, by being who they are, they wrapped the whole family with warmth and I began to hope that this photo essay may be able to provide warmth to the viewers out there as well, just like they did with my family.
They were not always together, if that is your guess. Often they simply did their own thing. But they would often check in on each other to make sure the other was having a good day. When they were tired, they often have a nap together and even sleeping in similar poses. It was genuinely funny and heartwarming to look at them.’
